Michael E. Smith Middle School
Physical Education Department Expectations and Requirements
Expectations:
Students are expected to come prepared for class. Being prepared means having a change of t-shirt and wearing sneakers. Students will be given time to change in the locker rooms at the beginning of class and at the end of class. During PE, students are expected to exhibit positive sportsmanship and good decision-making. Students are also expected to be a good team player and exhibit a positive attitude and positive teamwork skills such as: cooperation, communication, respect and active listening skills. Students must also show respect for each other and each other's differences. These expectations not only apply to physical education class, but in the locker room as well.
Students will be graded daily on a number scale. Daily grades are determined by coming prepared for class and the amount of effort, resiliency, respect, and sportsmanship exhibited during class. Final grades are calculated as an average from all daily grades and other assignments that are assigned during PE class. Students and parents may check their grades online by logging into PowerSchool. A daily grade will be given based on the following:
5 points: Student comes prepared for class with a change of shirt and sneakers, works to their full potential, participates 100% of the time and does not have to be reprimanded by the teacher.
4 points: Student comes prepared for class with a change of shirt and sneakers, works to their full potential, participates most of the time and does not have to be reprimanded by the teacher.
3 points: Student does not come prepared with a change of shirt but has sneakers, works close to their full potential and may have to be reprimanded by the teacher.
2 points: Student does not come prepared with a change of shirt but has sneakers, shows minimal effort and is reprimanded by the teacher to stay on task.
1 point: Student does not come prepared with a change of shirt but has sneakers, demonstrates poor effort and may have a discipline issue in class.
0 points: Student comes unprepared to class with no sneakers and may not participate, demonstrates no effort, and has a discipline issue in class. (Please not that it is unsafe for a student to participate without sneakers.)
If a child has an injury or illness and must be excused from PE class, please provide a doctor's note so it can be kept on file with the nurse. A student with a medical excuse will receive a "medical excuse" for their grade and will not be negatively affected.
The Wellness classes will be working closely with the Physical Education Department, which means each student will have PE and/or Wellness throughout the 2017-2018 school year.
Please feel free to contact Mr. Murphy at fmurphy@shschools.com or Mrs. Flynn at sflynn@shschools.com with any questions or concerns.
