MS. COOK Room #111
SEVENTH GRADE HEALTH EDUCATION
Classes will meet for a quarter during the year, 22 times. On the days kids have Health they will be in class from 7:55 to 9:07 AM. Students need to bring a folder to class that can stay in the room, and bring a pen or pencil daily. The following is a list of topics that are covered in class:
KEEPING HEALTHY FRIENDSHIPS
GOOD CHARACTER TRAITS / VALUES
COPING WITH FEELINGS
GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT (In Wellness)
Students learn information in a variety of ways. This includes script-writing, role-plays, group discussions, videos, reading, web research, games and worksheets. The focus is on guiding the students to make responsible decisions even when it goes against their peers' suggestions. This way, students can take charge of their safety, health and happiness.
The MESMS has chosen the Second Step Program, written by Committee for Children, to address issues around conflict and bullying. This is a great program and is taught through the Health and Wellness classes.
HOW GRADES ARE DETERMINED
In the Seventh Grade the students earn their grade by fulfilling requirements in one of three categories. Each category makes up a part of 100%. Classwork is worth 40%, Assessments are worth 30% and Participation is worth 30%. In Powerschool, parents and students can view their current grade, and the category and grade earned for each assignment during the term. In Health class the Participation category will include the parent/child homework assignments, contributions (written and oral) to group discussions, partner role-plays and being actively prepared to participate each day (i.e. folder and pencil). I do allow work to be completed after the due date, for partial credit, because I want the students to meet the highest standards, but cannot collect work past the end of the quarter.
