Mr. Billman-Golemme, known as Mr. B-G to his students, is in his 15th year of teaching English and journalism at South Hadley High School. A former newspaper reporter, he holds a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Educational Leadership from The University of New England, a Master of Educational Technology from Boise State University, a Master of English Education from Plymouth State University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
A Master Journalism Educator, Mr. B-G oversaw the relaunch of Spotlight, the high school’s student-run newspaper, from an 8.5X11 newsletter to an 11X17 broadsheet publication that’s won awards from the New England Scholastic Press Association, American Scholastic Press Association, National Scholastic Press Association, and others. Now a full-color news magazine, Spotlight is in its 100th year as a publication. Students interested in creating content for Spotlight, spotlight153.com, or any of the Spotlight Media Group's social media pages are encouraged to let Mr. B-G know, as one of his favorite things is helping students publish their work!
Each year, Mr. B-G organizes the high school’s Poetry Out Loud and Lions Youth Speech competitions. He is a recipient of the 2012 Pathfinder Award from Massachusetts Computer Using Educators and the Seventh Annual Teaching Excellence Award from South Hadley High School. In 2014, Mr. B-G was one of 50 teachers selected for a national education policy fellowship in Washington, D.C.
Mr. B-G holds Massachusetts teacher certifications in English, Speech, Visual Art, and Instructional Technology.
Mr. B-G and his wife – a French teacher at Mahar Regional – have a 5-year-old daughter named Marie and a 3-year-old daughter named Anna. When Mr. B-G’s not caring for his daughters or prepping for his classes, he enjoys reading, hiking, playing basketball, taking pictures, and walking his dog Alyza. For more than 15 years, Mr. B-G drove a red Honda CH-150 scooter, but it died a couple years ago and he has yet to replace it. Mr. B-G hopes to one day finish hiking the Appalachian Trail, which he began back in 2001.
